Photography Workshop for my B-Day!

Today I am taking a seminar on "Capturing True Emotion." This is my first training in photography. I have never taken a photography workshop or class really...though I did take a physics class once, "The Physics of Color Photography," but that was more a study of spectrum color.

I have decided it is time to actually learn formal technique and how to use all the power my equipment has to offer. Funny I spent so much time researching what to buy (from a technical perspective), yet I have not really taken the time to fully learn to use the equipment. I want to learn a lot this year!

The workshop was fairly basic, but it did force me to grab my manual to look up some things on my camera. After the workshop some of the group met to go put our skills to work at the zoo (though I think the zoo was a fairly odd selection for what we actually were trying to shoot). It was interesting, and I met a fellow photographer (Dave) that helped me stumble through finding some of the settings on my camera. This makes me realize I really should join a photo group to improve my skills.

For those who are interested in learning more (and summarizing helps me learn):
  • Light - in every aspect of photography you are playing with light. Think of it as being an artist and painting with light!
  • ISO - image sensitivity best correlates to the film speed in traditional photography this is how sensitive you want to image sensor to be to light. The higher your ISO, the more light it lets in. This does impact the quality of you photo (in grainy-ness/noise) so unless that is the desired effect you want to pay attention to the ISO you are shooting at.
    • Low ISO (100-200) is for bright light days and high image quality.
    • High ISO (>400) is for low light situations and reduce the image quality.
  • Aperture - impacts light (low aperture lets in little light, high aperture lets in lots of light) and depth of field (i.e. what is in or our of focal range). If you want to blur objects in the background you have a short depth of field (much of this is controlled within your lens). If you want to see everything you need a shallow depth of field.
    • Large Aperture (f/1.8,2,4,5.6) = shallow depth
      • Practice using this, you want to zoom in and get close to your subject
    • Small Aperture (f11,22,32) = longer depth
      • Practice using this, you want to zoom out and get far from your subject
  • Shutter Speed - impacts light (slow lets in little light, high lets in more) and controls motion.
    • To freeze motion use a fast shutter speed (>1/500)
      • Practice using this, water is a good subject.
    • To blur motion use a slow shutter speed (<1/30)
      • Practice using this, animals are a good subject.
    • Note: if you are not using a tripod, you do not want to shoot below 1/60 to focus on your subject.
How this translates into digital photography (the modes on your camera):
AF Point: selects where you want to focus (center-weighted, spot, evaluate)

Metering Mode: measure the light for a specifics area in your scene that you want to use, then set to that desired metering mode for your image.

P (Programmable Mode): You control ISO (camera does the rest - watch the impact ISO has on aperture and shutter).
*Practice by shooting in differnt light conditions.
If the shutter is slow, raise your ISO! (1/60 or faster if not on tripod!)

A/AV (Aperture Priority Mode): You set ISO + Aperture (camera controls the shutter speed).
*Practice setting ISO and a desired aperture to accomplish different effects.
If the shutter is slow, raise your ISO! (1/60 or faster if not on tripod!)

S/TV (Shutter Priority Mode): You control ISO + Shutter Speed.
*Practice setting ISO and a desired shutter speed to accomplish different effects
If the aperture can't open large enough, raise your ISO! (1/60 or faster if not on tripod!)

M (Manual Mode): You control ISO + Aperture + Shutter Speed.
*Practice here is a mnemonic device to remember a good order for shooting in manual, remember -
   I AM So Freaking Cute:
     1) ISO - set based on lightening conditions (i.e. sunny, rainy, night)
     2) Aperture - set based on how much light you need for effect (i.e. short or deep field)
     3) Meter - measure and see light in a specific area of scene.
     4) Shutter Speed - set based on how much motion (try to get needle in the middle)
     5) Focus
     6) Compose

General Tips:
  • Use your histogram to see the exposure levels (left is under exposed, right is over exposed).
    • Your display lies.
  • Things you want in composition: line, shape, form, color, texture, value, space.
    • There are many elements, but start with mastering the above.
  • Check out the Golden Section and Rule of Two Thirds for composition.
    • Many examples out there to learn more.
Happy Birthday to me :)

(286) Boat Race Photographs

This was indeed my first boat race gathering. The environment seems to be filled with drinking, drama, and speed. I am not so sure that is a great combination.

So despite the races not being my cup of tea, it was a challenging subject to capture. I definitely would need a higher powered telephoto to do justice, but here are some of the images I was able to capture:

(303) Misc. Photos

Here are some recent candid shots:

Ollie & Greg sleeping. I am amazed that Ollie will sit through the tossing and turning and still end up comfortably right by Greg's legs.

Syd looking regal in bed, but little do you know...

Just moments earlier Syd was caught in the act of hitting the catnip.

One of my personal favorites (oh so adorable), Greg & Killer taking a nap together:

And on a not so cute note, here is a mole that Ollie brought us. What strange looking critters!

(313) No Rest for the Weary!

Hello blog!

*insert awkward pause here*

Yes, I know it has been a while and you feel neglected. I swear I will make it up to you (famous last words)! Oh the stories I have to tell, but I am lacking the time to share them. I have been quiet the busy bee!

One month ago I got engaged. After some adventures is vendor selection we found the right fit and have managed to set a date!

October 2nd, 2010

And where might you ask? Parkdale, OR at the Mt Hood Bed and Breakfast.

Now that we have the venue and date, I am switching to photographers. We are reviewing a ton of portfolios and narrowed the search to a couple of our favorites for selection:
During my search I fell across this photographer who's work I fell in love with. Check out David Stubbs site. I didn't try to contact him as he is located in Wyoming, but I think I will see if I can get in touch if we go to Jackson Hole for our Honeymoon. I also have to give a shout out to my work buddy (though he does not do as much wedding photography these days) Adrien Klein. I was planning on doing one of his photo retreats, but time is scarce so I don't know when I will get to follow through and go on the adventure with his crew.

Tonight I am glass studio bound, so hopefully we will create some new neat obj’d’art to brighten the bare space below.

Ugh. The wedding in infiltrating my mind! In addition to a photographer I am desperately seeking a save the date (though I sent a cheesy one on Facebook to reserve flight for my out-o-towners).

Perhaps my most dreaded search is for a dress. I actualized part of this experience last weekend, but I will spare the details here as I write a full entry on the mortifying experience. On the up side I do have an appointment Thursday that holds much better promise. I will feel relieved if I can find at least one item that looks decent on me!

In other worldly new I applied for a new job (IT Portfolio Governance) that I think I would really enjoy! It would be an excellent fit. Last Friday I also spoke a Director in the business about an opportunity that is customer facing that would be a great fit for my experience and would not be within IT. I really wanted to give it a shot, but being that my contract runs out in July (7-22 to be precise), I don’t know if it is a viable option. We will see where the ebb and tide flow leads. So yes I realize this is not all that creative, but I wanted to start with the exciting news.

Now back to the wedding. I am in search of a caterer too. Any recommendations are appreciated! Sheesh even I can tell I am a little scattered by the entry. HA!

(318) Central Coast Photos

This weekend was our annual trip to the coast with Cara & Marcus. This year we were joined by Brandon, Jen & Joe, and Cami & Matt. Friday night was packed with fun including BBQ & drinks, Wii action, and a walk on the beach in the perfectly still night. The moon was clear, it was perhaps the best evening I have ever seen on the Oregon coast. Incredible.

Saturday morning Cara cooked a delicious brunch with overnight French toast, bacon, sausage, and fruit salad. After the splendid breakfast it was time to head out. I decided we should go into Newport!

Where better to start the day than a creepy pirate village? After roaming the strange buildings and statues. Only those who attended will understand the humor behind Greg's oh so innocent expression below:

Most of the stores were lame and strange, but we found a few studios that were neat. One glass studio (Pyromania) caught our fascination for a bit here is a snapshot of one of the pieces:

The group then split off and half went to the Hatfield Science Center while Cara, Marcus, and I went to take photos. See how cute is that! They are both learning how to use their new Nikon cameras...like two peas in a pod:

Our first stop was to take shots of the bridge with a stop at the Yaquina lighthouse as destination two (the oldest house in Newport):

On the way we were distracted by some flowers and I think perhaps my most interesting shots of the day:

At lunch we met up with Greg and ate at the Rogue Brewery.

Then headed up to the other Yaquina Lighthouse and check out the tide pools at low tide for sea creatures.

The night was stormy so it ended our photo taking, but all-in-all it was a blast and we agreed that the next beautiful sunset in Portland the three of us were on for another photo session!

Coastal Rejuvenation

Gorgeous! It is absolutely gorgeous outside and I have the day off! We are supposed to be headed to the beach right about now, but I don't have the heart to wake sleeping beauty. I think he over did it a little bit at the Blazer's game last night.

So instead I called a few venue to setup appointments for next week. Hopefully we can find one quick as we want to get married this fall and that is not so far away!

Now I need to motivate myself to finish packing.

This weekend will hopefully be jam packed with photo taking!

(322) Not So Beyond Bizzarre

For Jason's Birthday we decided to do a Portland Walking tour and started the evening in style at top the Bank Tower.

We chose the adult topic late night - Beyond Bizarre tour with wishes of murder, suicide, and gory stories around Portland.

The evening started over dinner @ Old Town Pizza.

We enjoyed delicious pizza and beer to get warmed up before facing the elements. Here Daphne, Chris and Jason enjoy a spinich, pesto, and feta pizza with pine nuts (not picture Mike, Karly, Greg and I):

Our tour began with a walk through Chinatown (aka Japantown) to catch the max as she explained different types of paranormal activity. I believe the guide said there were seven different types. A few I can remember of the top of my head are....
  1. Haunting - a spirit stays in a certain place (where they resided or died as a living person).
  2. Object Possession - personal belonging still connected death.
  3. Demonic possession - i.e. the exercist.
  4. Poltergeist - not a typical house haunting, rather a psychokinetic energy.

On the MAX trip Greg decided to test our our heavy duty EMF detectors:

Our first destination for ghost hunting was the White Eagle Cafe, haunted by the supposed lovers Rose and Sam (a murder suicide). Despite our best attempts, the only ghostly hauntings we encountered were man-made...we can thank Greg for that.

The final destination was Old Town Pizza (where we had begun). Said to be lurking in the basement is a converted street walker named Nina who died under suspicious circumstances. Check out Old Town's site for more information on her story.

All-in-all the good company made the night worth it, but the tour left much to be desired.

(327) First Attempt at Portraits

This weekend we went to visit our friends Dave & Steph and met their sweet baby boy.

I offered to take them to the park and do some portraits of them with their little one. Here are a few of my favorite shots:
